Family Members

If your membership allows it, you can add family members (for example a spouse or child) to your household. They get member benefits under your account. This page explains what the family feature is, how to add people, send invitation links, and manage your household.

What the Family Feature Is

The family feature links other people in your household to your membership. Each person has their own login, but they are tied to your membership so they can get member pricing on classes and events and any other member benefits. Each family member uses one family add-on "slot," which has an extra fee per person. A membership covers up to 6 family members. Only the account owner can buy slots and invite people. Not all membership tiers include family add-ons; check your tier on the membership page or in your account.

Buying Family Slots

You need a free slot before you can invite someone.

  • When you join or renew — On the membership tier page, set the Family Add-ons quantity before you click Add to Cart.
  • Later — Open your account menu → Family. The Add More Family Slots (or Add Family Members) card lets you choose a Quantity and click Add to Cart, then check out as usual.

Each add-on you buy gives you one slot, so buying a quantity of 3 gives you 3 slots. If you enter more than you are allowed, the quantity is lowered to the most you can add and a note explains why, for example: "You already have 4, so you can add 2 more — we set the quantity to 2."

If you pay by check or in office, your new slots are added once staff record your payment. The order confirmation page reminds you to come back to your Family page then.

How to Add a Family Member

  1. Log in and open your account menu, then choose Family (or go to https://portal.uibeta.org/account/family).
  2. Click Invite Family Member. (This button only appears when you have a free slot.)
  3. Enter the person's First Name, Last Name, and Email, and optionally choose a Relationship. Click Send Invitation.
  4. An invitation email is sent to that address. It contains a link the person must click to accept and set up their account.

Until they accept the invitation, they will not be linked to your membership. The invitation shows under Pending Invitations with the date it was sent and how many days are left before it expires. You can Cancel a pending invitation; to send a fresh one, cancel the old one and invite the person again.

What the Invited Person Receives and How to Accept

The person you invite gets an email with a link (for example https://portal.uibeta.org/invitation/... with a unique token).

  1. They open the email and click the link.
  2. If they already have an account: they sign in when prompted. They are then linked to your household.
  3. If they do not have an account: they are asked to create one (email and password). After they finish, they are linked as a family member.

If they already have an account, they must sign in with the same email address the invitation was sent to. When they are done, they click Accept Invitation.

If the page says "This invitation has expired" or "This invitation has already been used," ask the account owner to send a new invitation. If it says it couldn't reach the server, wait a moment and try again; the invitation is still valid.

Once they have accepted, they appear on Family in your account menu, and they can use member benefits (such as member pricing) when they log in to their own account.

Managing Family Members

  • Viewing — Open your account menu → Family. The Family Slots box shows how many slots you have Purchased, how many are Active, how many invitations are Pending, and how many are Available. Pending invitations do not use a slot until they are accepted. Below that you see Pending Invitations and Active Family Members.
  • Removing — Click Remove next to an active family member. Removing them stops their member benefits under your account.

Policies for adding or removing family members (and any fees) are set by Upstate International. If you have questions about limits or billing, contact staff.

How Family Affects Membership Pricing

Adding a family member usually incurs an extra fee (family add-on) that may be charged when you add them or at renewal. Member pricing for classes and events applies to family members once they are linked and have accepted the invitation. The main account holder (you) remains responsible for the membership; family members do not have a separate membership tier, they share yours.

Need help? Contact Upstate International staff if an invitation was not received, the invitation link expired, you need to remove a family member, or you have questions about family add-on pricing.
